Such a long time no see! Đã lâu rồi tôi không post bài mới trên IELTS Corner, thời gian vừa qua tôi viết và bảo vệ luận án tiến sĩ cho nên bận quá không thể làm gì khác.
Trong 2 năm rưỡi xây dựng trang web này, tôi đã trao đổi và sửa bài cho nhiều bạn, và tôi rất vui vì sau một thời gian các bạn đều phản hồi với tôi rằng các bạn học tập tiến bộ cũng như thi IELTS đạt điểm như mục tiêu.
Giờ tôi đã về Hà Nội và có thể trực tiếp chia sẻ kinh nghiệm và kiến thức tiếng Anh của mình với các bạn để hỗ trợ các bạn có phương pháp học hiệu quả và đạt được mục tiêu thi cử của mình.
Tôi cùng một người bạn của mình thành lập một nhóm học tiếng Anh với các trình độ từ cơ bản, nâng cao, luyện thi IELTS và tiếng Anh chuyên ngành Y khoa.

The chart below shows the number of visitors to Victoria Park, Botanical Garden and Sandown Zoo from 2000 to 2008.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. You should also comment on the reasons for each increase or decrease in numbers.
Write at least 150 words.
Phân tích bài
- Dạng bài: Changes – mô tả sự thay đổi của số liệu theo thời gian.
- Gom nhóm các đối tượng và dự đoán nguyên nhân của sự thay đổi số liệu: trên biểu đồ có 3 đối tượng, ta chia thành 2 nhóm như sau.
- Nhóm thứ nhất có xu hướng tăng giá trị: Sandown Zoo và Victoria Park. Lý do tăng có thể là do mở Children’s Zoo vào năm 2007 và mở cửa Boating Lake vào năm 2005.
- Nhóm còn lại có xu hướng giảm giá trị: Botanical Gardens. Ở đây ta lưu ý rằng dù có khai trương Restaurant vào năm giữa năm 2007-2008 nhưng số lượng khách đến Botanical Gardens vẫn không thay đổi rõ rệt.

The graph indicates changes in the number of people who visited three places between 2000 and 2008, and possible explanations for these changes.
Overall, the numbers of visitors at Sandown Zoo and Victoria Park increased, while there was a decline in the figures for Botanical Gardens.
In 2000, Sandown Zoo had the highest number of visitors (60,000), followed by that of Botanical Gardens (approximately 50,000) and Victoria Park (around 22,000). After a decrease of 10,000 in the next two years, the figures for Sandown Zoo gradually went up to 70,000 in 2007. It then had increased substantially to 100,000 by 2008, potentially due to the opening of the Children’s Zoo in 2007. Regarding Victoria Park, there were few changes during 2000-2005. In 2005, the Boating Lake was opened in Victoria Park, which could likely lead to an increase of 15,000 visitors in the following three years.
In contrast, despite having a peak of nearly 70,000 in 2003, the figures for Botanical Gardens had gone down to under 50,000 in 2008. It seems that the restaurant located here did not influence the number of visitors.

Để làm tốt dạng bài này bạn cần lưu ý viết thêm một câu dự đoán về lý do vì sao số liệu lại biến thiên. Sở dĩ chỉ là “dự đoán” là vì đề bài không nói rõ rành rành “this is the reasons why…” cho nên chúng ta chỉ có thể phỏng đoán về lý do mà thôi.
Bạn có thể sử dụng một số ngôn ngữ dự đoán như sau:
- A possible reason for [the change in data] is that…
- [The change in data] could be explained by…
- [The change in data] could potentially be due to…
Thực hành: Áp dụng cho đề bài dưới đây, bạn hãy:
- Xác định dạng bài
- Gom nhóm các đối tượng cần mô tả, đồng thời nghĩ về nguyên nhân gây ra sự thay đổi của từng đối tượng
- Viết bài Task 1 hoàn chỉnh gồm 4 đoạn: mở bài, đoạn tổng kết thông tin và 2 đoạn thân bài
- Kiểm tra số lượng từ trong bài viết: có đủ 150 từ hay không? Nếu trên 180 từ thì tìm cách rút gọn xuống còn khoảng 170 từ.

IELTS Writing: Làm thế nào để không bị ảnh hưởng bởi tâm lý phòng thi?

Có nhiều yếu tố dẫn tới tình trạng này, ví dụ như bạn bị giảm phong độ vào hôm thi thật hoặc có thể lý giải chung chung rằng “không may mắn”. Tuy nhiên có một yếu tố mà ai ai cũng gặp phải đó là tâm lý phòng thi. Khi thi thật bạn phải chịu nhiều áp lực nhiều hơn do thời gian làm bài có hạn cộng với bản thân mình cũng lo lắng hơn so với lúc làm bài ở nhà. Vậy cần làm gì để hạn chế tối đa tác động bất lợi của tâm lý phòng thi?
Bạn hoàn toàn có thể làm quen với tâm lý phòng thi, đặc biệt đối với kỹ năng Writing, bằng cách viết bài trong điều kiện giống như lúc thi thật. Cụ thể đó là:
1. Căn giờ để làm bài: viết Task 1 trong tối đa 20 phút và Task 2 trong tối đa 40 phút.
Mỗi lần “thi thử” bạn có thể chỉ viết Task 1 hoặc chỉ viết Task 2, nhưng cũng có thể viết cả Task 1 và Task 2 (trong 60 phút).
2. KHÔNG sử dụng bất cứ phương tiện hỗ trợ nào (ví dụ như từ điển, bài giảng của thầy cô…)
3. Dùng giấy thi thật để viết bài
- Ngoài tác dụng làm quen với cảm giác thi thật, việc viết bài trên giấy thi còn giúp bạn xác định độ dài tương đối của bài viết: sau khi viết xong bạn đếm số lượng từ và kiểm tra xem với 150 từ của Task 1 và 250 từ của Task 2 thì bài sẽ dài chừng nào trên giấy thi.

Lưu ý:
- Tuỳ từng người mà cảm giác lo lắng khi đi thi sẽ nhiều ít khác nhau, cũng như việc làm quen với cảm giác phòng thi sẽ nhanh chậm khác nhau.
- Nhìn chung bạn cần viết bài trong điều kiện thi thật một vài lần rồi sẽ quen dần. Khi đã quen rồi (sau khi viết khoảng 15-20 bài Writing trọn vẹn) thì cũng không cần làm như vậy quá nhiều lần bởi khá mất thời gian.

The graph illustrates changes in the annual GDP growths of three nations from 2007 to 2010.
Overall, there was an increase in GDP growth of Japan, while those of Tusinia and Ecuador followed a downward trend.
In 2007, Japan had the lowest GDP growth (2%), following that of Ecuador and Tusinia with 3.1% and around 6.3%, respectively. However, the figure for Japan experienced a gradual increase in the next three years. It climbed to 4.1% in 2008 and then 5.2% in 2009. By 2010 the GDP growth of Japan had peaked at 6.5%.
By contrast, the figure for Tusinia gradually decreased to 3% in 2010, which was almost half of the value at the starting time point. The pattern for Ecuador’s GDP growth was a little different. The figure reached the highest point of nearly 5% in 2008, but then fell sharply to 1.2% the next year before recovering to 2.2% in 2010.

However, technology usage could also be problematic. One issue is that the overuse of technology may harm people’s relationship. For example, many people now prefer online contacting to direct communication. Keeping contact through the Internet is indeed convenient, but in the long term it may make people more distant. In addition, the rapid development of and easy access to cell phones and computers make it more difficult to control behaviours of youngsters. A good demonstration is that teenagers could get access to inappropriate information from Internet forums. Later, they can even be incited to carry out harmful behaviours, as seen in the case of Islamic States.
In short, it is undeniable that the society benefits greatly from technology, but we also should bear in mind the potential detrimental effects of technology.

Các bạn có thể viết theo hướng hoàn toàn đồng ý với nhận định trên, như vậy phần thân bài sẽ gồm 2 đoạn và mỗi đoạn nói về một benefit của technology.
Tuy nhiên viết như vậy có thể gặp khúc mắc ở việc viết sao cho đủ 250 từ mà bài essay không bị rườm rà.
Chúng ta có thể nhìn nhận đề bài trên theo một hướng khác. Tôi paraphrase lại đề bài như thế này, bạn lưu ý rằng câu hỏi của đề bài vẫn hoàn toàn như cũ:

In the past years there have been enormous developments in the field of technology, which have offered people so many benefits. However, technology also brings about some potential disadvantages.

First, they help improve work effectiveness through reducing manual tasks and allowing distant collaborations. For instance, the invention of Excel permits workers to save records and calculate with extreme ease instead of spending so much time performing by hands. The pie chart shows the amount of money that a children’s charity located in the USA spent and received in one year. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

The pie charts indicate the amount of donations given to a US charity towards children and the expenditures of this charity over a period of one year.
Overall, the money donated was slightly higher compared to the amount expended. Donations were from various sources, while there were three sources of expenditures.
The total amount of money that was provided to the charity over the year examined was more than 53,560,000 dollars. A substantial 86.6% of this revenue was from donated food, which was more than 8 times higher than the second highest percentage (10.4%) obtained from Community Contributions. The remaining four other sources contributed very modestly, including Program Revenue, Other Income, Investment Income and Government Grants with 2.2%, 0.4%, 0.2% and 0.2%, respectively.
Regarding the expenditures of approximately 53,220,000 dollars, the vast majority (95.8%) of this money was used for Program Services. The remaining revenue sources were spent on Fundraising (2.6%) and Management and General (1.6%).
